Educational Programmes

The educational programme of the Centre is oriented towards the dissemination of knowledge in relevant aspects of space science and technology. The centre offers post graduate level courses in the areas of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System, Satellite Communications, Satellite Meteorology and Global Climate, Space and Atmospheric Sciences. These courses are carried out at various centres of ISRO/DOS as given under:

Subject Institution
Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System Every year starting in July at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun.
Satellite Communications Every alternate year starting in August at Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad.
Satellite Meteorology and Global Climate Every alternate year starting in August at Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad.
Space and Atmospheric Sciences Every alternate year starting in August at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad.
Global Navigation Satellite Systems Every alternate year starting in August at Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad.
Small Satellite Mission Every year in November at CSSTEAP,IIRS,Dehradun
Short Term Courses /Workshops and Awareness programmes Above institutions

The post graduate courses are organized in two phases. The Phase I is conducted in India for 9 months. The Phase I consists of core modules where the emphasis is on the development and enhancement of knowledge and skills through classroom lectures, tutorials and hands on experiments/practical. The performance of the candidates is periodically assessed through oral, written and practical tests. This is followed by pilot projects, giving practical training towards how the skills gained can be used for solving problems by applying input from space as one of the information content. At the end of Phase I, successful candidates are given post graduate diploma by the centre.

During Phase II, each returning student is expected to carry out an approved project in his or her home country for a period of one year. The project is formulated jointly by the scholar and his/her advisor in consultation with the sponsoring organization, in an area relevant to the development of their country. This gives an opportunity to the scholar to apply their knowledge and training received to tackle a 'real life' problem, where space input can be used. These scholars, whose academic qualifications satisfy Andhra University norms can submit a thesis based on their research work for the award of Master of Technology (M.Tech) degree. Since 2004, a few meritorious students are awarded fellowship to complete their one year research work at CSSTEAP.

Besides the post graduate level courses, the centre also conducts short courses (4 to 6 weeks) on specific themes in the 4 areas, how space inputs can be used for national development. Centre has also plans to support research programme leading to Ph.D degree.
